Well, nobody saw that coming. Ivory Coast went to Nantes, faced a French side that admittedly wasn't at full strength, and came away with a 2-1 win thanks to a late goal from none other than Manchester United's own Amad Diallo. As a United fan, it's hard not to enjoy that one a little bit.
France made plenty of changes for this World Cup warm-up, so it would be unfair to treat this like a full-strength Les Bleus side getting turned over. That would be doing Ivory Coast a disservice too, though, because they played well and deserved the win. They were organised, they were sharp on the break, and when it mattered most, they had a man ready to step up.
That man was Amad. The winger has had a stop-start career at Old Trafford, full of loans, injuries, and moments where you wonder if he'll ever nail down a regular spot. But when he's been given a chance and actually fit, he has shown real quality. A late winner in an international friendly isn't going to change his club career overnight, but it's another reminder that the talent is absolutely there.
For Ivory Coast, this is a lovely confidence boost ahead of World Cup qualification. Beating France, even a rotated France, is a result you can build on. It shows their squad has depth and that they can compete with the top sides on their day. That matters when you're trying to make it to the biggest tournament in football.
For France, there's probably not too much panic. Didier Deschamps will have used this to look at some fringe players and the result, while not what they wanted, isn't going to derail their preparations. Lose to Ivory Coast with a much-changed side and people raise eyebrows. Lose with your best eleven and then we'd have a real conversation.
Either way, Amad got his moment and took it. Hopefully he gets plenty more of them. Let me know your thoughts.
