How Gerrard went from 'best night' to 'head like a box of frogs'

Steven Gerrard is one of those blokes where the more you learn about him, the more your head spins. Everyone knows the Istanbul story. Everyone knows the comeback, the captain's armpage, the sheer force of will that dragged Liverpool back from 3-0 down against AC Milan in 2005. One of the greatest nights in football history, full stop. No arguments entertained.

Then two months later the man wanted to leave. Two months. The confetti had barely been swept up.

It came out that Chelsea were sniffing around, Mourinho had the chequebook open, and Gerrard had apparently decided that actually, yeah, maybe Stamford Bridge wasn't such a bad idea. The same Liverpool he'd just carried to European glory on his back like some Scouse Rocky Balboa. He even went as far as handing in a transfer request. It genuinely happened.

Now to be fair to him, and fairness matters here, footballers are human beings making massive decisions under enormous pressure with agents whispering in their ears every five minutes. The grass always looks greener. Gerrard was probably looking at Chelsea's squad thinking they were about to dominate English football for years, which they did, and wondering if he was missing out. That's understandable even if it's hard to stomach.

What makes it funny in hindsight is that he obviously changed his mind, stayed, and became an absolute legend at Anfield. The transfer request got quietly forgotten. Liverpool fans mostly forgave and forgot too because he gave them Istanbul and you can't really argue with Istanbul.

But the image of Gerrard lifting that trophy on the greatest European night of his life and then two months later essentially texting his way out of the club is genuinely one of football's most chaotic plotlines. As the man himself apparently admitted, his head was all over the place. Which is the most human thing a superstar has ever said.

The lesson here is probably that even the greatest players are just people making messy decisions in real time. Nobody has it all figured out. Not even Stevie G.
