Ibrahima Konate leaving Liverpool on a free. Just let that sink in for a second. One of the best centre backs in the Premier League, a Champions League winner, a proper unit who makes defending look easy, and Liverpool are about to just... wave him off at the door like he's a bloke who came to read the meter.
Now to be fair to Liverpool, this isn't a total shock. Contract talks have been dragging on for a while and when a player gets to this point without signing, the writing is usually on the wall. But knowing it was coming doesn't make it any less of a headache. Losing a player of Konate's quality for absolutely nothing in return is the kind of thing that keeps sporting directors up at night. Or at least it should.
The thing about Konate is he's not flashy. He doesn't do the most. He just turns up, wins headers, reads the game brilliantly, and occasionally reminds forwards that life is not going to be easy today. Quiet, efficient, devastating. Like a good accountant but for defending.
At 25 years old he's got his best years ahead of him and every big club in Europe will be circling right now. Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG, you name it. They'll all be queuing up to sign the man for free and that thought alone should make Liverpool fans feel slightly sick.
The bigger question now is what Liverpool do about it. Slot has built something really exciting at Anfield and the squad is generally in good shape but losing Konate without a proper replacement lined up would be a genuine mistake. They've got Van Dijk who isn't getting any younger and Quansah who is promising but not yet proven at the top level consistently. They need to act and act quickly in the summer window.
Konate was a brilliant servant to the club. No drama, no nonsense, just a proper professional who did his job week in week out. Liverpool fans should give him the send off he deserves. And then immediately start worrying about who is replacing him.
