Liverpool moving to bring in Reijnen as Slot's number two is actually a really smart piece of business and it tells you everything you need to know about where this club is heading. When a club backs its manager in the summer by strengthening the coaching setup, not just the squad, that is a sign of genuine trust. FSG have done their homework, they know what they have in Slot, and they are building around him properly. After what he delivered in his first season, they would have been absolute mugs not to.
There was noise for a while about whether Slot would stay, whether the big clubs in Europe would come sniffing, whether Liverpool would suddenly find themselves in that horrible position of replacing a manager who had just won them the league. But this move signals pretty clearly that Slot is not going anywhere and that suits everyone just fine. The man has barely put a foot wrong since he walked through the door and the fans deserve to see what he can do with a full preseason and a proper run at things.
Now over at Goodison, or wherever Everton are playing next season, David Moyes admitting the end to the season was despondent is at least honest. Fair play for not dressing it up. But despondent is one word for it. Dreadful is another. Everton have been spinning their wheels for years now and a big summer is not just wanted, it is absolutely needed. The problem is they have been saying that for about four summers in a row and the gap between what gets said and what actually happens is roughly the size of the Grand Canyon.
Moyes knows the job. Nobody is questioning that. But knowing the job and having the tools to do it are two very different things. Everton need investment, a clear identity, and someone to just make a decision and stick to it. Like Rocky said, it ain't about how hard you hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. Right now Everton are just getting hit.
Let me know your thoughts.
