Well, nobody saw that one coming. Real Madrid have officially confirmed the re-appointment of Jose Mourinho as their head coach, handing the Portuguese manager a three-year deal to return to the Bernabeu. If you had that on your bingo card, please collect your winnings immediately.
Mourinho's first spell at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013 was, to put it kindly, eventful. He won La Liga in style during the 2011-12 season, breaking Barcelona's grip on the title in a way that genuinely impressed even his harshest critics. But the falling out with players, the finger in Tito Vilanova's eye, the constant media warfare and the messy exit left a bitter taste. The relationship between Mourinho and Madrid has always felt like a complicated ex you swore you'd never text again. And yet here we are.
What's interesting is that Madrid clearly believe Mourinho still has something to offer at the very highest level. He's been around the block since his last job at Roma, and while his reputation took a few knocks along the way, the man knows how to organise a team, win ugly when needed, and navigate the chaos of a dressing room full of superstars. That last bit might actually be his greatest skill.
The three-year deal suggests this isn't a panic hire either. Madrid are committing to a vision here, or at least that's how they want it to look. Whether Mourinho can actually coexist with the modern Madrid setup and keep the peace long enough to build something is the real question. History suggests he tends to hit a wall around year two or three at any club, so the timing of that deal length is almost poetic.
As a Manchester United fan, this writer has extremely personal feelings about Mourinho, none of which are entirely rational. But setting all that aside, this is a fascinating appointment that could genuinely work, or spectacularly fall apart. Either way, it'll be brilliant to watch from a safe distance.
