Early Life
Born in Valencia on September 20, 1995, Alejandro Grimaldo came through Barcelona's famous La Masia academy. He was considered one of the most technically refined young full-backs in Spain, but Barcelona's competition for places was fierce. Unable to break through, he moved to Benfica in Portugal at 20.
Breakthrough
At Benfica, Grimaldo became one of the best left-backs in European football โ consistently scoring and assisting from deep, comfortable with the ball, and able to drive into attacking positions. He spent seven seasons there winning four Primeira Liga titles and becoming a fan favourite, before leaving on a free in 2023.
Career
Leverkusen signed him for nothing and the impact was immediate. Grimaldo's attacking contributions from left-back โ goals, assists, set-piece delivery โ were instrumental in the club's historic unbeaten Bundesliga title run of 2023-24. He was arguably the best left-back in the world that season.
