Compare Players →Biography
Early Life
Born in Lisbon in 1994, Bernardo came through the Benfica academy and was immediately identified as one of Portugal's most technical young players. Monaco signed him in 2015 and he was instrumental in their extraordinary Ligue 1 title-winning season of 2016-17.
Breakthrough
Manchester City paid £43M in 2017 and Bernardo became one of Guardiola's most trusted players almost immediately. His ability to play on either wing, through the middle or as a false nine gives Guardiola a tactical flexibility that no other player provides.
Career
Five Premier League titles with City. The treble in 2023. Every major domestic honour England has to offer. His technical quality is extraordinary even by City's standards — he regularly produces performances that leave opponents unable to get near him.
Personal Life
His personal life has included a period in Monaco, where he remains very popular. He has been linked with moves to Barcelona for years but has always remained at City. He was fined by the FA in 2019 for a tweet that was deemed racially insensitive, which he maintains was a private joke — he apologised.
Legacy
One of the most complete technical midfielders of his generation — considered by many to be the most underrated player in the Premier League.
