Biography
Early Life
Born in Carlisle on June 27, 2003, Jarrad Branthwaite joined Carlisle United's academy as a youngster before Everton spotted him and brought him to Merseyside. He is part of the Cumbrian football tradition — a region that quietly produces sturdy, technically able players — and his development through Everton's youth setup gave him the tactical foundation to become one of England's best centre-backs.
Breakthrough
Branthwaite went out on loan to gain senior experience, most notably at PSV Eindhoven, where he performed impressively in the Eredivisie and Champions League. Returning to Everton, he became their most important defensive player and was recognised by the England senior squad, earning his first caps under Gareth Southgate and then Thomas Tuchel.
Career
By 2026, Branthwaite had extended his Everton contract until 2030 — but his deal contains a release clause exceeding £70M active in the summer of 2026. Manchester United held talks with his camp over a potential transfer, with the player reportedly interested in the move. Everton's financial situation gives them some leverage, but keeping a player of his calibre will be extremely difficult once the clause activates.
Personal Life
A hamstring injury and subsequent surgery in October 2025 limited him to just eight appearances in the first half of the 2025-26 season — a frustrating setback for a player building real momentum. His recovery and return to form are closely watched by both Everton fans and the clubs monitoring him.
Legacy
Bought from Carlisle for a nominal fee and turned into a £70M centre-back. Everton's best player and their biggest asset — the question of how long they can keep him is one of English football's most fascinating subplots.
