Biography
Early Life
Julian Alvarez was born on January 31, 2000 in Calchín, a tiny town in the Cordoba province of Argentina. He grew up in a farming community far from the big football academies of Buenos Aires. River Plate spotted him and he moved to the capital as a teenager, rising through their youth system to become one of South America's most feared strikers.
Breakthrough
Manchester City paid £14M for Alvarez in January 2022, then loaned him back to River Plate for six months. When he returned to Manchester, he scored four goals at the 2022 World Cup — including two in the semi-final against Croatia — to help Argentina win the trophy. Suddenly everyone knew who Julian Alvarez was.
Career
Three seasons at Manchester City produced two Premier League titles, a Champions League winners medal, and consistent goals from a tight rotation with Erling Haaland. He was asked to play a supporting role and did so brilliantly. When Atletico Madrid paid £82M in 2024, it was to give him the central role his quality demanded.
Personal Life
Alvarez is from rural Argentina — a background that is unusual for elite European footballers and one he is quietly proud of. He is close to his family and deeply religious, attributes that helped him remain grounded despite the extraordinary acceleration of his career from small-town Argentine to World Cup winner.
Legacy
A World Cup winner at 22. A Champions League winner at 23. A player who can succeed alongside the very best and then lead a team alone. Atletico Madrid's next great era may well be built around him.
