Biography
Early Life
Born on February 6, 1995, in Bochum — the Ruhr industrial heartland of Germany — Leon Goretzka is a product of the working-class football culture that built the Bundesliga. Son of a local police officer, he came through Bochum's own youth system and then Schalke's academy, two clubs whose identities are inseparable from their communities.
Breakthrough
At Schalke, Goretzka emerged as one of the best young midfielders in Germany — powerful, technically gifted, and capable of scoring from deep. Bayern Munich came calling, and in 2018 he joined as a free agent. The move was seen as a statement: Bayern wanted elite German talent, and Goretzka was their man.
Career
At Bayern Munich, Goretzka formed one of the great club midfield partnerships with Kimmich — two complementary players who covered for each other brilliantly. He contributed goals and assists across multiple Bundesliga title wins and the 2020 Champions League triumph. In January 2026, Bayern confirmed he would not be offered a new contract, with his departure set for the summer.
Personal Life
Goretzka has been one of Germany's most vocal sportspeople when it comes to social causes. He and Kimmich set up the 'We Kick Corona' fundraising initiative in 2020, raising over €1 million in 48 hours. He has also spoken openly about mental health challenges in professional football — a subject few players at the elite level address publicly.
Legacy
A decade of titles. A Champions League medal. A charity campaign that moved a nation. One of the most complete midfielders Germany has produced in a generation — and one of the good ones off the pitch too.
