Biography
Early Life
Luis Fernando Diaz Marulanda was born on January 13, 1997 in Barrancas, La Guajira, Colombia. He grew up in one of Colombia's most remote and impoverished regions, near the Venezuelan border. His path to professional football came through sheer determination — there are no academies in Barrancas, just passion and football in the streets.
Breakthrough
Diaz came through Colombian football with Junior and then joined Porto in Portugal, where he became one of the most exciting wingers in European football. His performances in the Champions League caught Liverpool's eye and they paid £37M in January 2022, beating Tottenham to his signature on deadline day.
Career
His Liverpool career has been interrupted by injuries, most notably a serious knee ligament problem in 2023 that kept him out for five months. When fit, he is one of the Premier League's most direct and dangerous forwards — fearless on the ball and devastating at pace. His father was briefly kidnapped in Colombia in 2023 — a traumatic episode he handled with remarkable dignity.
Personal Life
Diaz's family story is central to understanding who he is. He grew up in extreme poverty and has never lost the hunger and gratitude that comes from that. His father Manuel's kidnapping was resolved after police intervention — and Luis's response of dedicating goals to him became one of football's most emotional stories of the year.
Legacy
A player of real quality who has navigated extraordinary personal challenges while performing at the highest level. His story from Barrancas to the Champions League is football at its most inspirational.
