Biography
Early Life
Born in Gelsenkirchen in 1986, Neuer grew up supporting Schalke 04 — the club he would later captain to multiple cup finals. He came through Schalke's academy and was hailed as Germany's next great goalkeeper almost from the moment he broke into the first team.
Breakthrough
His performances at Schalke attracted Bayern Munich, who signed him for £19M in 2011. The Schalke fans burned his effigy in protest — but Neuer went on to redefine what a goalkeeper could be. His sweeper-keeper style, playing sometimes 30-40 metres from his goal, changed the entire position.
Career
A World Cup winner with Germany in 2014. Multiple Champions League winner with Bayern. He won the Ballon d'Or bronze in 2014. His ability to act as an eleventh outfield player while goalkeeping made Bayern's high defensive line possible — it was genuinely revolutionary.
Personal Life
Married twice, Neuer is known for his introversion and professionalism off the pitch. He suffered serious foot fractures in 2017 that kept him out for over a year — his recovery and return to elite form was remarkable for a goalkeeper in his early thirties.
Legacy
Widely regarded as the greatest goalkeeper of all time, or at least the most influential. He did not just play the position — he reinvented it. Every modern sweeper-keeper owes a debt to Neuer.
