Born in Bree, Belgium in 1992, Courtois was identified as exceptional from a young age. He joined Genk's academy and was discovered by Chelsea, who paid a nominal fee and immediately loaned him to Atlético Madrid — an unusual arrangement that turned out to be transformative.
