New Format Explained
The 2026 World Cup is the first to change its format since 1998. 48 teams, 12 groups, and a brand new Round of 32. Here is exactly how it all works.
Key Format Facts
How It Works
Group Stage
48 teams are placed into 12 groups of four. Every team plays three matches against the other teams in their group. The top two from each group are guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds.
Third-Place Rule
The eight best third-placed teams from across all 12 groups also advance. This means a third-place finish does not automatically mean you are out — the competition is alive until the final group game.
Round of 32 — New Stage
This is the new addition to the World Cup. All 32 qualified teams enter a knockout round. Lose here and you are out. Win and you progress to the familiar Round of 16. From this stage onwards, matches that finish level after 90 minutes go to extra time and then penalties.
Round of 16 to Final
From the Round of 16 onwards the format is unchanged. Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, a Third Place Play-Off, and then the Final on July 19. The team that wins the final will have played eight matches — one more than at any previous World Cup.
