Which Countries Have Hosted More Than Once?
๐ฒ๐ฝ Mexico โ 1970, 1986, co-host 2026
Once 2026 is complete, Mexico will have hosted World Cup matches more times than any other country. The 1970 tournament is remembered as one of the greatest ever, and 1986 produced Diego Maradona's most famous run. Estadio Azteca becomes the first stadium to host matches at three different World Cups. See the Mexico World Cup 2026 squad.
๐ฎ๐น Italy โ 1934, 1990
Italy hosted the second-ever World Cup in 1934, winning the title on home soil. In 1990, "Notte Magica" ended in disappointment โ the Azzurri lost on penalties to Argentina in the semi-final and finished third.
๐ซ๐ท France โ 1938, 1998
France's first hosting in 1938 saw Italy retain their title on French soil. Sixty years later, France hosted again and won their first World Cup, with Zinedine Zidane the hero of the final against Brazil. See the France World Cup 2026 squad.
๐ง๐ท Brazil โ 1950, 2014
Both of Brazil's tournaments are remembered for painful nights for the home support. In 1950, Uruguay won the deciding match at the Maracanรฃ in front of almost 200,000 fans. In 2014, Germany's 7-1 semi-final win remains the most painful host exit in World Cup history. See the Brazil World Cup 2026 squad.
๐ฉ๐ช Germany / West Germany โ 1974, 2006
West Germany won their second title on home soil in 1974, beating the Netherlands in the final. Germany hosted again in 2006 and finished third, with Italy going on to win the tournament on penalties. See the Germany World Cup 2026 squad.
๐บ๐ธ USA โ 1994, co-host 2026
The USA hosted the World Cup for the first time in 1994, a tournament that helped grow the sport across North America and ended with Brazil beating Italy on penalties. The USA returns as a host in 2026, this time sharing the tournament with Canada and Mexico. See the USA World Cup 2026 squad.
Has the Host Country Ever Won?
Hosting the World Cup has been a genuine advantage. Six of the 23 tournaments have been won by the host nation: Uruguay in 1930, Italy in 1934, England in 1966, West Germany in 1974, Argentina in 1978 and France in 1998. That works out to roughly one in four โ a real edge given how rarely any country wins at all. Not every host gets the fairytale, though. Brazil's 2014 campaign remains the most painful host exit in World Cup history, losing 7-1 to Germany in the semi-final on home soil. For 2026, the question is whether the USA, Canada or Mexico can become the seventh host nation to lift the trophy.
The Last 10 World Cup Host Countries
The last ten World Cups have been spread across an impressive range of geography: 1986 Mexico, 1990 Italy, 1994 USA, 1998 France, 2002 South Korea & Japan, 2006 Germany, 2010 South Africa, 2014 Brazil, 2018 Russia and 2022 Qatar. Between them, those tournaments have touched every inhabited continent โ Europe four times, the Americas three times, and Asia, Africa and the Middle East one each. South Africa 2010 brought the World Cup to African soil for the first time, while Qatar 2022 was the first tournament held in the Middle East. World Cup 2026 continues that spread, returning to North America for the first time since 1994.
World Cup 2026 โ USA, Canada & Mexico
World Cup 2026 will be the largest in history and the first hosted by three countries at once. The USA, Mexico and Canada are staging 104 matches across 16 cities, with the USA hosting the majority of games including every match from the quarter-finals onward. The final will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Mexico becomes the first country to host World Cup matches on three separate occasions, while Canada hosts a World Cup for the first time. For the full match-by-match breakdown, see the World Cup 2026 schedule.
From 13 teams in Uruguay in 1930 to 48 teams across three countries in 2026, the World Cup has grown into the biggest event in sport while keeping its host nations at the centre of the story. Whether it's Uruguay's surprise win in 1930, Brazil's heartbreak in 2014, or whatever happens across North America this summer, the host always shapes the tournament.
