Chelsea are apparently the frontrunners to sign Khadija Shaw from Manchester City this summer, with the Jamaican striker likely heading to Stamford Bridge on a free. And honestly, what a signing that would be if they pull it off.
Shaw is genuinely one of the best strikers in the Women's Super League. Full stop. The woman scores goals for fun, she's physical, she's relentless, and she has that rare quality where defenders just look uncomfortable the moment she's anywhere near them. Manchester City losing her on a free would sting massively, and the fact it's come to this tells you everything about the instability that's been running through that club lately.
Chelsea women have been brilliant for years now. Emma Hayes built something genuinely special at Kingsmeadow and Sonia Bompastor has walked into a squad that is already stacked. Adding Shaw to that attacking line would be like Goodfellas adding another wise guy to an already dangerous crew. It just makes everyone around her better and scarier at the same time.
The free transfer element is the bit that makes this even more interesting. No fee. Just walk in and take one of the best strikers in the country straight off the shelf. City fans will absolutely be fuming about that and rightly so. When you let a player of that quality run down her contract, that's a recruitment and contract planning failure plain and simple. No sugar coating it.
For Chelsea though this feels like proper business. They have the budget, they have the project, and they have a manager who knows how to use a focal point striker effectively. Shaw would walk straight into that team and make them even harder to beat than they already are.
The WSL title race next season just got a little bit more interesting if this goes through. Arsenal will be watching this nervously. City will be watching it with their head in their hands.
Sometimes the free transfers end up being the most damaging ones of all. Ask anyone who watched Paul Bosman change football forever.
