Manchester United sniffing around Rafael Leao and Jarrod Bowen in the same window. Right. So this is happening then.
Look, Leao is genuinely one of the most exciting players in Europe on his day. Rapid, skilful, the kind of bloke who can make a full back look like he's never played football before. AC Milan letting him go at a cut-price fee tells you everything you need to know about how that relationship has soured. When a club is basically putting a discount sticker on a player of that quality, something has gone badly wrong behind the scenes. United would be getting a steal if they pull this off, and that is not something you get to say about United transfers very often these days.
But then there is the other side of the coin. This is Manchester United. The club that turned Antony into a £86 million museum exhibit. The club where attacking players go to watch their confidence slowly leave their body like a slow puncture. Leao needs freedom, pace, and a system that actually makes sense. Whether United can offer him that right now is a genuinely fair question.
Then there is Jarrod Bowen being thrown into the same conversation, which is an interesting one. Bowen is a proper footballer. Consistent, hard working, someone who actually tracks back and means it. He is not the flashiest name but he is exactly the kind of reliable, no-nonsense wide player that United have been crying out for. West Ham letting him go would be a gut punch for their fans though, no question about that.
The thing is, United need to get this window right. Not just decent. Actually right. Amorim is clearly trying to build something and he needs tools that fit the blueprint, not just big names signed because someone in a boardroom liked the shirt sales numbers. Doing both of these deals well would be impressive. Doing one of them badly would be very on brand.
The potential is there. The worry is always the execution with this lot.
