Gomes close to Atletico deal - Sunday's gossip

Joao Gomes to Atletico Madrid then. Can't say it's a massive shock if we're being honest. Wolves are in a right mess at the moment and when clubs start sniffing around your better players, you know the wheels are coming off. Gomes has been one of the few bright spots in what has been an absolute slog of a season for them, so losing him feels like pulling the handbrake out of a car that's already sliding down a hill.

Atletico are a proper club though. You can't be too hard on Gomes for wanting that. Simeone's side, European football, the whole package. If you're a young Brazilian midfielder with ambition you're not turning that down are you. Wolves fans will be gutted but they'd do the same if they were him.

PSG keeping Luis Enrique on with a new contract is interesting. The bloke has had a tough time of it in Paris, which is basically the tradition at that club. Managers go there, lose their minds dealing with the dressing room politics, and leave looking ten years older. Enrique has somehow held it together and PSG without Mbappe actually look like a proper team rather than one lad and ten passengers. Fair play to him. Genuinely.

Now. Liverpool keen on Emi Martinez. Right. So this is either a genius bit of transfer planning or Slot fancying a goalkeeper who absolutely loves a bit of drama. Martinez is brilliant, genuinely world class, but he comes with the full package doesn't he. The saves, the penalties, the celebration that made half of France want to throw their telly out the window. Alisson is getting on a bit and Slot clearly wants options. If they actually pull this one off it would be an unbelievable bit of business. Aston Villa will not want to sell and frankly who could blame them.

Three stories, three very different vibes. One club selling their best player to survive, one manager somehow thriving in the most chaotic job in football, and Liverpool already plotting world domination again. Just another Sunday in football.
