Andoni Iraola has arrived at Liverpool's training ground, and the new era at Anfield is officially underway. The Spaniard, who impressed plenty of people during his time at Bournemouth, has now taken on arguably the biggest job of his managerial career, and by all accounts he is not hanging around when it comes to getting started.
Pre-season is often underestimated by fans, but it is where managers actually start to put their fingerprints on a squad. Iraola will be looking at what he has got, figuring out who fits his style, and working out where he needs the club to strengthen before the Premier League kicks off. That is a lot to get through in a short space of time, especially at a club with the expectations Liverpool carry.
What made Iraola stand out at Bournemouth was his ability to organise a team defensively while also getting them to press with real intensity. Liverpool fans will hope he can bring that same energy to Merseyside, but doing it with considerably better players should make the job a little more straightforward. Should being the operative word, of course, because football has a funny way of humbling people.
The real question hanging over this appointment is whether Iraola can handle the weight of managing Liverpool. Bournemouth is a fantastic club, but the scrutiny is on a completely different level at Anfield. Every press conference, every team selection, every result will be pored over. That said, he handled himself with real confidence and clarity at Bournemouth, which suggests he is not someone who will wilt under pressure.
As a Manchester United fan, it would be very easy to wish him nothing but chaos and confusion. But in all honesty, Liverpool deserve a proper manager who can put together a genuine title challenge, because the Premier League is always better when they are competing at the top. Whether Iraola turns out to be that man remains to be seen, but the early signs of energy and commitment are at least encouraging.
