Marcus Rashford has said he wants to play football without his name being brought up every single day, and honestly, you can understand where he's coming from. The comment came after Gary Neville apparently tried to get a conversation going about the Manchester United forward on his podcast, and Rashford's response was essentially a polite but firm thanks, but no thanks.
Now, Gary Neville is many things — pundit, podcast host, occasional Twitter warrior — but subtle is not always one of them. When he decides someone needs discussing, they get discussed. Rashford clearly feels like he's been the subject of too many of those conversations lately, and given the scrutiny he's been under at United, that's not exactly a surprise.
The thing is, Rashford has a point. He's had a rough couple of seasons by his own standards, there's been noise about his attitude, his form, his future, and seemingly every move he makes gets picked apart. At some stage, all of that noise has to affect a footballer's head, and it's reasonable that he'd want the volume turned down so he can just focus on playing.
But here's the other side of it. When you're a high-profile player at one of the biggest clubs in the world, earning the wages Rashford earns, the conversation doesn't just switch off because you'd prefer it to. The scrutiny comes with the territory. The best way to make people stop talking about your problems is to play so well that they only talk about your performances instead.
As a United fan, it's genuinely hard not to feel a bit of sympathy for Rashford. He came through the academy, scored on his debut, looked like the real deal for years. Nobody wants to see him become a cautionary tale. But the way back to quieter days is through the football, not away from the conversation.
If he plays well, consistently, week after week, people will absolutely mention his name every day — just for very different reasons.
