Biography
Early Life
Marcus Rashford was born on October 31, 1997 in Wythenshawe, Manchester. He grew up in a deprived area of the city with his mother raising five children largely alone. He joined Manchester United's academy aged seven โ a Blue in a Red school, as his local friends always reminded him.
Breakthrough
Rashford made the most dramatic debut in Premier League history. Thrown on in a Europa League match against Midtjylland aged 18, he scored twice. Then scored twice in his Premier League debut three days later. Jose Mourinho used him, then didn't, then did. The career arc of a young player at a chaotic club was never smooth.
Career
His best season came under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021-22: 24 goals. But inconsistency and a difficult relationship with managers became recurring themes. His most profound impact was off the pitch in 2020 โ when he single-handedly forced the UK government to extend free school meals during the COVID pandemic. His letter to MPs went viral and the government U-turned within hours.
Personal Life
Rashford is close to his mother who he credits with everything, and has donated millions to food banks, book clubs for disadvantaged children, and mental health charities. He received an MBE for his campaign work. A loan move to Aston Villa in 2025 rekindled some of the form that had gone missing under various United managers.
Legacy
The footballer who changed government policy. For all the goals, the one achievement that might define Rashford's legacy is making a UK government U-turn on child poverty. That matters more than any trophies.
