Manchester United have agreed a fee of up to £70m with Brighton for midfielder Carlos Baleba, and honestly, it is the kind of transfer news that makes you sit up and pay attention. Brighton, as ever, have done what Brighton do — bought low, developed well, and sold high. Fair play to them, it is basically an art form at this point.
Baleba is a serious footballer. He is only 21 years old, he is physical, he can carry the ball, and he has that defensive bite in midfield that United have been crying out for since, well, quite a long time if we are being honest. The Cameroonian international caught plenty of eyes during his time at the Amex, and it is no surprise that a club with United's ambitions has come calling.
That said, £70m is a lot of money for a player who has only had one full season in the Premier League. It is not a number you throw around lightly, especially when United have been trying to get their finances in order under INEOS. There will be supporters who think that kind of fee is on the steep side, and they would not be wrong to question it. Brighton clearly know what they have got, and they have negotiated accordingly.
From a United perspective though, if Baleba can come in and do the dirty work in central midfield — winning the ball, protecting the back four, and letting the more creative players ahead of him do their thing — then he could genuinely be the missing piece. United have often looked too soft and too easy to play through in the middle of the park, and Baleba is not the type to let that happen.
The structure of the deal going up to £70m suggests there are add-ons involved, which is fairly standard these days. Whether he hits those performance targets will depend on how quickly he settles and how well the team performs around him. There is plenty of potential here, but also genuine pressure that comes with that price tag.
