Arsenal Eye Julian Alvarez as Atletico Madrid Signal They're Open to Selling

Reports coming out of Saturday's papers suggest that Atletico Madrid are open to selling Julian Alvarez, and that Arsenal are very much in the picture to sign him. Now, that is a sentence worth reading twice over a morning coffee.

Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City last summer for a fee somewhere around the £82 million mark, which felt like a lot at the time and still feels like a lot now. He is a World Cup winner, a Champions League winner, and genuinely one of the better centre-forwards in world football. So the idea that Atletico are already willing to move him on after less than a full season is either a sign that something has gone wrong behind the scenes, or Diego Simeone has decided the system doesn't quite fit the player. Either way, it raises an eyebrow.

From Arsenal's perspective, this makes a lot of sense on paper. Mikel Arteta has been crying out for a reliable, clinical striker who can operate in tight spaces and still contribute to the press. Alvarez does all of that. He is not a traditional number nine who just stands in the box waiting for the ball — he links play, he runs channels, and he scores goals that matter. Arsenal fans will know exactly what has been missing, and Alvarez ticks most of those boxes.

The obvious question is the price. If Atletico paid around £82 million less than a year ago, they are not going to let him go for a discount. Arsenal would likely be looking at a similar or even higher fee, and that is before you factor in wages for a player of his profile. It is a big swing, but Arsenal have shown recently they are not afraid to spend when they believe in a target.

Whether this one gets over the line is another matter entirely. Transfer rumours in the papers on a Saturday have a long and proud history of going absolutely nowhere. But the logic is there, the need is there, and Alvarez is genuinely that good. Let me know your thoughts.
