Man City Ready to Bid for Enzo Fernandez After Chelsea Miss Their Own Deadline

Manchester City are reportedly preparing a bid for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, and the interesting part is that this comes after Chelsea apparently set themselves a deadline to sell him — and then missed it. Only Chelsea, really.

Fernandez arrived at Stamford Bridge in January 2023 for a British record fee of around £107 million, which at the time felt like the kind of signing that would define a generation. Instead it has largely defined the chaos of the Todd Boehly era, where big money arrivals have too often failed to justify the hype. The Argentine was a World Cup winner with real quality, but he has never truly hit the heights that fee demanded in a Chelsea shirt.

Pep Guardiola's side have had a difficult season by their extraordinary standards, and it's no surprise they are looking to strengthen in midfield. City have always had an eye for a player who can control the tempo of a game, and on his best days Fernandez absolutely can do that. The question is whether his best days are consistent enough to justify what would surely be another enormous transfer fee.

From Chelsea's perspective, moving Fernandez on would free up serious wage space and help them stay on the right side of the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, which have become the invisible hand steering a lot of decisions at the big clubs right now. The fact they set a deadline and missed it does suggest there is some urgency, even if their negotiating position looks a little weakened as a result.

For City fans this will feel like an exciting possibility. For Chelsea fans it probably stings a bit, watching a player they paid a fortune for potentially walking out the door to a direct rival. As a United fan, watching two of our rivals potentially do big business together is the kind of thing that makes you want to look away, but you simply cannot.

Whether this one gets over the line remains to be seen, but it has all the ingredients of a proper summer soap opera. Let me know your thoughts.
