Why Carlos Baleba Could Be the Midfielder Manchester United Have Been Missing

Manchester United are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton, with the club targeting him as their so-called third midfielder as the rebuild at Old Trafford continues to take shape. It is the kind of transfer story that deserves a proper look rather than just a reaction, because on paper this one actually has some logic behind it.

Baleba is still only 21 years old, which already puts him ahead of several options United have been linked with recently. He is a defensive midfielder by trade, one of those players who does a lot of the unglamorous work that keeps a team ticking. He wins the ball, he covers ground, and he does not overcomplicate things. Brighton have done their usual excellent job of developing him, so United would be getting someone who has been coached properly and knows how to play in a structured system.

The framing of him as the third midfielder is telling. It suggests United are building a proper midfield unit with clear roles rather than just throwing bodies in and hoping for the best, which has admittedly been something of a club tradition for a while now. If the plan is to have two more creative or box-to-box options ahead of him, then Baleba sitting as the anchor makes genuine sense. Every good midfield needs someone who does the dirty work so the others can express themselves.

The obvious question is whether Brighton will sell. They tend to be pretty savvy when it comes to negotiating, and they will not let Baleba go for a bargain. United will need to pay the right money, and given how their transfer business has gone in recent years, supporters will be forgiven for nervousness until the ink is dry.

But if United can get this one over the line at a sensible fee, it looks like smart recruitment. A young, hungry defensive midfielder with Premier League experience is exactly the kind of profile that a squad rebuild should be built around.
