Right so Liverpool have only gone and done it. Arne Slot has been shown the door at Anfield after just two seasons, and apparently Andoni Iraola is the man they want next. Two seasons. Let that sink in for a minute.
Now look, Slot came in after Klopp and that was always going to be one of the hardest jobs in football. Taking over from a bloke who basically turned Liverpool into a machine for nearly a decade is like being asked to follow Goodfellas with a sequel. Almost impossible from the start. So there is some sympathy there, genuinely.
But here is the thing. Liverpool do not sack managers on a whim. This is not Chelsea. They are not out here burning through coaches like they are going through free trials on Netflix. When Liverpool pull the trigger it usually means something has gone seriously wrong behind the scenes, or the performances have been bad enough long enough that the data people up at Fenway have made their decision. Either way it is big news.
Iraola is a genuinely interesting choice though. What he did at Bournemouth was nothing short of remarkable. Organised, intense, tactically sharp, and he got that squad punching so far above their weight it was almost embarrassing for the bigger clubs. The man can coach, that much is clear.
The question is whether he can handle the step up to a club like Liverpool where the pressure is an entirely different animal. Bournemouth fans love him and rightly so, but managing Liverpool means every single result is front page news and the fanbase expects to compete for the title every season. That is a very different dressing room to deal with.
Liverpool will back whoever comes in, they always do eventually. But sacking a manager after two seasons still feels rushed. If Slot was given the same patience Klopp was given in his early years at the club things might look very different right now.
Whoever walks through that door next has got a big job on their hands. No pressure though.
Let me know your thoughts.
