Pep Guardiola leaving Manchester City was always going to cause a ripple effect and now the first big wave has hit. Ruben Dias has instructed his agent to find him a new club this summer. The Portugal defender who signed a contract extension until 2029 just last summer has told City he wants to go. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are all monitoring the situation. City's asking price is around €60 million. This is the beginning of what could be a very disruptive summer at the Etihad.
The timing tells you everything about what Guardiola meant to that dressing room. Dias arrived in 2020 and immediately transformed City's defensive structure. He was arguably the most important signing of the Guardiola era. The connection between manager and player was deep and genuine. When Guardiola announced he was leaving at the end of the season, Dias clearly decided the project that had defined his career was over. A new manager, a new technical direction and a rebuilding process he has no particular appetite to be part of.
Real Madrid make the most sense as a destination. They are losing David Alaba on a free and Antonio Rudiger is 33. They need a commanding, experienced centre-back who can lead a defence and Dias fits that profile perfectly. PSG have just won back-to-back Champions Leagues and are looking to keep building. After winning back-to-back European titles Luis Enrique will want to maintain the quality of his squad and Diomande is exactly the kind of young talent he has built PSG around. Bayern under Vincent Kompany are rebuilding and would welcome a player of Dias's authority and pedigree.
For Manchester City this is a genuine problem. Losing Guardiola was always going to unsettle players but losing Dias so quickly suggests the new era has not inspired confidence. City finished second in the Premier League this season, won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup but fell short in Europe. The summer was always going to require significant reinvestment.
