It never rains but it pours at Old Trafford, does it? Manchester United have confirmed that Manuel Ugarte has undergone knee surgery after picking up an injury during the World Cup. No specific timeline has been given yet, which is never a great sign, but the club have at least been upfront about the fact that the surgery has taken place.
Ugarte only joined United last summer from Paris Saint-Germain and, if we're being honest, his debut season was a bit of a mixed bag. There were flashes of the tenacious, ball-winning midfielder that made him look like exactly what United had been missing for years, but inconsistency and the general chaos of life at Old Trafford meant he never quite nailed down that commanding midfield presence week after week. Still, the foundation was there, and heading into a new season with some stability around him, there was genuine optimism that he could really kick on.
That makes this injury all the more frustrating. Knee surgeries can vary wildly in terms of recovery time, from a few weeks to several months depending on the severity, and until United give fans a clearer picture of the timeline, it's hard to know how worried to be. If this keeps him out for a significant chunk of the early season, it's a real problem. United's midfield has looked threadbare at times and Ugarte is very much part of the solution, not the problem.
From Uruguay's perspective, it's also a blow. Ugarte is central to how they operate in the middle of the park and losing him for any period of international football is going to hurt their setup too.
The hope is that having the surgery done promptly means he's already on the road to recovery and could be back before the season gets too deep into its rhythm. United fans will be keeping a close eye on any updates, and rightly so. He's too good a player to be sitting in the treatment room for long.
