McCabe to leave Arsenal in the summer

Katie McCabe leaving Arsenal in the summer is one of those stories that feels like a gut punch even if you knew it was probably coming. One of the best left backs in the world, captain of the Republic of Ireland, and honestly one of the most exciting players women's football has produced in years. Arsenal losing her is a massive deal and anyone who tells you otherwise is just not paying attention.

The thing is, this has had the feel of a slow goodbye for a while now. Contract talks that never quite seemed to get over the line, a player of her quality probably looking around and wondering what the next chapter looks like. She is 29 in July, right in the prime years, and if there is interest from bigger clubs with deeper pockets then you can hardly blame her for exploring it. Football is short. You get maybe a handful of years at your absolute peak and you have to make them count.

What stings for Arsenal fans is that McCabe is not just a player, she is a personality. The kind of figure who makes you actually care, who puts herself about, who never looks like she is going through the motions. The WSL needs those characters and losing them to foreign leagues or just general upheaval is a pattern that has to be addressed at some point. The league keeps growing but it keeps losing its biggest names just as casual fans are starting to learn who they are.

For Ireland the picture is different. She will still be captain, still be the face of the national team, still be the reason half the country tunes in. Whatever club she ends up at next season she will carry that armband with the same intensity she always has.

Arsenal though. They need to sort this out properly. Not panic buy. Not throw money at a panic replacement. Actually plan, actually build, actually think about the future instead of reacting to it like they always seem to do at the worst possible moments. The talent is there at the club. The structure now has to match it.
