Chelsea are sniffing around Morgan Rogers. Of course they are. Because why sign one attacking midfielder when you can sign seventeen and then wonder why none of them are playing regularly by March?
Look, Rogers has had a genuinely brilliant season at Aston Villa. The lad has been electric. Fast, direct, creative, he's been one of the most exciting players in the Premier League this year and the improvement in his game under Unai Emery has been really something to watch. Credit where it's due, Villa have developed him into a proper top level player.
But this is Chelsea. And Chelsea doing Chelsea things is basically as reliable as death and taxes at this point. They have already got more attacking midfielders than a five a side team has players. Cole Palmer. Enzo Fernandez. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Christopher Nkunku floating around somewhere in the background like a ghost. And now they want Rogers on top of all that? Who is making these decisions, Enzo Maresca or someone playing Football Manager with infinite transfer budget and no regard for squad balance whatsoever?
The Todd Boehly era at Chelsea genuinely feels like that scene in Goodfellas where Henry Hill is just narrating an endless list of names and everyone is on the payroll. Except instead of the mob it is a football club and instead of wiseguys it is attacking midfielders nobody can fit into a coherent lineup.
The real concern here is for Villa and their fans. Because if Chelsea come in with stupid money, and they will, it puts Emery in a really difficult position. Rogers is homegrown, relatively young, and genuinely improving every single week. Losing him would hurt Villa badly right when they are trying to push back into European football.
Chelsea will probably sign him, play him fifteen times, then go buy someone else in January. Rogers deserves better than that honestly. He has earned the right to be at a club that actually has a plan.
Hopefully Villa tie him down and Chelsea go bother someone else for a change.
