Jack Grealish to Chelsea. Just let that sink in for a moment. Enzo Maresca apparently wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge and honestly, it is the most Chelsea transfer rumour that has ever existed. A massively expensive, inconsistent, slightly baffling signing that raises more questions than answers. Todd Boehly is somewhere rubbing his hands together like a kid on Christmas morning.
Here is the thing though. Grealish is genuinely talented. Anyone who watched him at Aston Villa knows the man can play football. He was electric, he was direct, he was exciting. Then he went to City for a hundred and fifteen million pounds and something just switched off. Pep happened to him. It is not even a criticism, Pep has done it to better players than Jack. He gets in your head, reorganises your entire understanding of football, and sometimes the player comes out the other side better and sometimes they just come out confused.
Grealish came out confused.
But here is where it gets interesting. Maresca is not Guardiola. Chelsea under Maresca actually want their wingers to run at people, to be direct, to cause chaos. That could genuinely suit Grealish more than anything he has had to do at the Etihad for the last three years. A fresh start, a manager who believes in him, and getting away from the suffocating pressure of being the most expensive English player ever at a club where he never quite fitted the system.
The concern is obvious though. Chelsea have roughly four hundred wingers already. Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho, Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk who they cannot seem to shift despite trying everything short of leaving him on someone's doorstep with a note. Adding Grealish into that mix feels like turning up to a party and realising everyone already brought the same bottle of wine.
If the price is right and City take a big hit on the fee, it could work. If Chelsea pay over the odds again, it is just another chapter in the same story they keep writing. Maresca clearly has a vision though and that at least is something.
