Manchester United lost to Wrexham. In Helsinki. In July. Look, preseason results mean about as much as a nil-nil in a reserve fixture on a wet Tuesday, but there is something almost poetic about Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's little club from North Wales turning up in Finland and putting one past United. The football gods have a sense of humour and they are absolutely using it right now.
To be fair to Wrexham, they are no longer the romantic underdog story they once were. They have back-to-back promotions under their belt, serious investment behind them, and a squad that is being built with genuine ambition. Beating a Manchester United side in preseason is not exactly the moon landing, but it is not nothing either. They deserve credit for going at United and taking their goal.
For United, the scoreline will sting a little, but the bigger picture is what matters in these summer run-outs. The squad is still being assembled, players are at different fitness levels, and nobody is reading too much into a one-goal friendly defeat. Or at least they should not be.
The genuine bright spot on the day was Andrey Santos, who made his first appearance for the club and by all accounts looked lively and sharp in midfield. The Brazilian youngster has been on United's radar for a while and there has been plenty of excitement about what he could bring. If his debut showing is anything to go by, there might be something real there. Preseason friendlies are not always the most reliable audition stage, but when a player stands out in one it does tend to mean something.
As a United fan, losing to Wrexham is the kind of result that gets screenshot and sent to your group chat with a lot of crying laughing emojis. It is embarrassing on the surface but completely meaningless in the grand scheme of things. The real tests come when the Premier League kicks off and the points actually matter.
For now, chalk this one up as a footnote and keep an eye on Santos. That is the real story here.
