Biography
Early Life
Born in Glasgow in 1994, Robertson was released by Celtic's academy as a teenager. He worked his way up through Queen's Park in Scotland's third tier, then Dundee United, then Hull City — a classic lower-league-to-top-level journey that is almost impossible in the modern game.
Breakthrough
Liverpool bought him from Hull for £8M in 2017 when Hull were relegated from the Premier League. The fee looked modest. Within months he had displaced Alberto Moreno and within a year he was arguably the best left-back in the world.
Career
Champions League winner in 2019. Premier League winner in 2020. FA Cup winner. His crossing assists output is extraordinary — he has assisted more Premier League goals than almost any other defender in history. His engine, commitment and quality on the ball make him one of Klopp's most important signings.
Personal Life
A proud Scot who captains his national side. He turned down a chance to be Scotland's all-time cap leader in 2023 to focus on his club form — such is his professionalism. He and his family are well-known in Liverpool, having settled there entirely.
Legacy
The greatest bargain in Liverpool's history. £8M from relegated Hull City to becoming one of the best left-backs in the world is one of modern football's great scouting stories.
