Biography
Early Life
Born in Berlin in 1993, Rüdiger grew up in a complex family situation — his parents separated early and he was raised largely by his mother. He came through the youth system at VfB Stuttgart and developed into one of Germany's most physically imposing young defenders.
Breakthrough
Stuttgart sold him to Roma for £9M in 2015, then Chelsea paid £34M in 2017. His physical presence and combative style made him a cult figure at Stamford Bridge. The Champions League win in 2021 was the peak of his Chelsea career. Then, in a stunning piece of business, he left Chelsea on a free and joined Real Madrid.
Career
Real Madrid won La Liga in his first season, then the Champions League. Rüdiger has brought an intensity and physicality to Real's defence that complements the technical quality around him. His goal-scoring from set pieces adds another dimension.
