Real Madrid have moved quickly to secure the long-term future of Aurélien Tchouaméni, with sources confirming to ESPN that the French midfielder has agreed a new contract that will keep him at the Bernabéu until 2031. Not a bad bit of business from the Spanish giants, all things considered.
Tchouaméni joined Real Madrid from Monaco back in the summer of 2022 for around £85 million, and it is fair to say the move has not always been completely plain sailing. Injuries and the sheer weight of expectation that comes with wearing that famous white shirt have tested him at times, but the lad has shown real character in pushing through the difficult patches.
What this new deal tells you is that Real Madrid genuinely believe in him as a cornerstone of their midfield for the foreseeable future. With Luka Modric winding down his incredible career and the squad going through a natural generational shift, Tchouaméni represents exactly the kind of profile the club needs. He is athletic, he is combative, and he reads the game well. He is not flashy, but then the best holding midfielders rarely are.
From a French national team perspective this is good news too. Tchouaméni has established himself as a key figure for Les Bleus, and having that kind of security and confidence at club level will only help him continue to develop heading into a World Cup year in 2026.
Now obviously as a Manchester United fan, this writer would not say no to having a midfielder of Tchouaméni's quality at Old Trafford. We have been crying out for someone who can actually protect the backline properly for what feels like about a decade now. But fair is fair, and Real Madrid holding onto him makes complete sense for everyone involved.
At 24 years old with a deal running until 2031, Tchouaméni is set to spend the best years of his career in Madrid. Whether he fully lives up to the enormous fee they paid for him remains the interesting question, but this contract shows the club are absolutely backing him to do exactly that.
