Biography
Early Life
Born in Hershey, Pennsylvania on September 18, 1998, Christian Pulisic moved to Germany as a teenager to join Borussia Dortmund's academy. Growing up in a football family β his father Mark played college soccer β he had the technical foundation and the ambition to make it in Europe long before the pathway existed for most Americans.
Breakthrough
Pulisic became the youngest foreign player to score in the Bundesliga before the age of 18 and quickly became one of the most exciting teenagers in European football. Chelsea paid Β£57.6M in 2019 β a British record for an American player. He won the Champions League in 2021, scoring in the semi-final against Real Madrid.
Career
His Chelsea years were defined by talent undermined by injuries and the relentless squad rotation that characterised the club's chaotic ownership era. AC Milan signed him in 2023 and it was a perfect fit β he thrived in Italy, became one of Serie A's best wide players, and recaptured the form that had made him a teenage sensation.
Personal Life
Pulisic is often described as the face of American soccer β the player who proved that a US player could reach the very top of European football and stay there. He has spoken candidly about mental health challenges during his difficult Chelsea years, and the importance of finding the right environment.
Legacy
Captain America. The most important American footballer since the days of Tab Ramos or Eric Wynalda β and significantly better than both. He's making the impossible look possible for an entire generation of American footballers.
