Early Life
Karim Mostafa Benzema was born on December 19, 1987 in Lyon, France, to parents from Algeria. He grew up in Bron, a tough suburb of Lyon, and came through Olympique Lyonnais's academy. He was a Lyon first-team player at 17 and scored regularly enough that Real Madrid came calling before his 22nd birthday.
Breakthrough
Real Madrid paid £35M for Benzema in 2009 and he spent fourteen extraordinary years at the Bernabeu. His relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo was complex — often described as the ideal support to CR7's brilliance — but when Ronaldo left in 2018, Benzema stepped into the spotlight and exceeded every expectation.
