Biography
Early Life
Born in Cagliari, Sardinia on February 7, 1997, Nicolò Barella came through Cagliari's youth system on the island where football runs deep in the culture. Sardinian footballers carry a particular tenacity and Barella embodies it — fierce, combative, technically excellent, never willing to give an inch.
Breakthrough
Barella spent his first professional years at Cagliari in Serie A, developing into one of Italy's most complete midfielders. Inter Milan paid €12M for him in 2020 — what was then considered a bargain and rapidly proved to be one. Under Antonio Conte, he won the Serie A title and became Italy's most important midfielder, playing a central role in Italy's extraordinary Euro 2020 triumph.
Career
Barella has been the engine of Inter's midfield through multiple seasons of Serie A dominance and deep Champions League runs. His contract runs until 2029. A difficult 2025-26 season by his own standards — some critics noted a drop in passing accuracy in Europe — but even a below-par Barella is still one of Italy's finest.
Personal Life
He is intensely proud of his Sardinian origins and maintains a close connection to Cagliari despite his Inter status. Barella is passionate, competitive and sometimes confrontational on the pitch — a player who plays the game with his emotions close to the surface. He married his childhood sweetheart and has several children.
Legacy
Euro 2020 winner. Multiple Serie A champion. One of the best Italian midfielders of his generation. When he retires, Sardinia will put up a statue.
