Biography
Early Life
Born in Amsterdam on May 16, 2002, Ryan Gravenberch came through Ajax's world-famous De Toekomst academy and made his first-team debut at 16 — the same age Johan Cruyff once did. The comparisons were ambitious but not entirely unfounded: he has the same languid stride, the same technical ease, and the same ability to make the game look simple.
Breakthrough
Gravenberch was one of the best young midfielders in the world at Ajax, winning multiple Eredivisie titles and catching Bayern Munich's eye. The move to Germany didn't work — Bayern paid €40M and barely played him. Liverpool signed him in 2023 and Arne Slot found the right way to use him.
Career
Under Slot at Liverpool, Gravenberch became one of the Premier League's best midfielders almost overnight — driving through lines, winning the ball back high, and producing at both ends. A wasted year at Bayern was followed by a breakout at Liverpool that confirmed the talent Ajax had always known was there.
Personal Life
Gravenberch is softly spoken but deeply confident in his own ability. He was frustrated by his lack of opportunities at Bayern but handled the difficult period professionally. His attitude and character were cited by Slot as key reasons Liverpool moved for him.
Legacy
Still only 23. Already one of the Premier League's best midfielders. The ceiling is genuinely high.
