Pedro Porro has signed a new long-term contract at Tottenham Hotspur, keeping him at the club until 2031, and honestly it is the kind of news that Spurs fans have been crying out for. Too often in recent years, Tottenham have watched good players run down their contracts or push their way out of the door, so getting a deal like this done early is genuinely encouraging.
Porro has been one of the more exciting right-backs in the Premier League since he joined from Sporting CP back in 2023. The Spaniard brings pace, energy and a real willingness to get forward and cause problems, which makes him a proper modern full-back in every sense. He is not just a defender who occasionally pops up in dangerous areas — he is someone who genuinely changes how Tottenham attack down the right side.
From Spurs' point of view this makes a lot of sense. You do not hand out a deal until 2031 unless you see the player as a real cornerstone of what you are trying to build, and it suggests the club's hierarchy have a clear picture of where they want to go. That is something Tottenham have not always been great at communicating, so credit where it is due.
Of course, being a Manchester United fan means watching Spurs do sensible things is always slightly painful, mostly because it serves as a reminder that our own club occasionally makes the decision-making of a confused goldfish look organised by comparison. But fair is fair — this is a smart piece of business by Tottenham.
The bigger question now is whether Spurs can build a squad around players like Porro that is actually capable of challenging for trophies. Locking down your best players is step one, but it counts for very little if the team around them does not improve. Still, you have to start somewhere, and keeping Porro long-term is definitely a start worth making.
