Andy Robertson leaving Liverpool feels like the end of an era. Say what you want about how the last couple of seasons have gone, but that lad gave everything for that club. Absolute warrior down the left. The kind of player you build songs about, and they did.
But here we are. He's out the door at Anfield and apparently Spurs are the ones moving quickest to snap him up. Which is... an interesting one.
Look, Robertson is not the Robertson of 2019. Nobody is pretending otherwise. The pace has dropped a little, the energy isn't quite the same, and Liverpool clearly decided the time was right to move on. These things happen. Even the best ones have a shelf life. It's football not a fairy tale.
But here's the thing. Even a slightly slower, slightly older Robertson is still a proper full back. He reads the game well, he's got experience coming out of his ears, and the lad still cares. You can see it every time he plays. That never really leaves some players.
Spurs though. Spurs. You almost feel sorry for him walking into that circus. Remember when Rocky trained hard, got himself ready, and then had to deal with everything falling apart around him before he even got in the ring? That's Robertson at Spurs that is. The man will be absolutely up for it and then Postecoglou will get sacked in November or something and it'll all go sideways.
To be fair to Spurs, they do need a left back. Badly. And on a free or a cut price deal, the business makes sense on paper. If Robertson can get fifteen to twenty solid games a season out of his legs, that's a useful squad player at the very least.
Liverpool fans will have mixed feelings about this. Gratitude absolutely, but also that slight sting of watching a legend potentially end up somewhere that feels a bit... beneath him. He deserved a bigger send off than this feels like.
Still, football moves fast and Robertson has earned the right to choose his own next chapter. Let's see how this one plays out.
