How to Play

  1. 01Read the emoji. Some sound out the name, some tell you the story.
  2. 02The row of blanks under the emoji is the answer's shape — one slot per letter, one group per word.
  3. 03Type the player's name. Three guesses, no multiple choice.
  4. 04Surnames on their own are accepted where only one player has them, and nicknames work too — Zizou, Gazza, Batigol, Kun.
  5. 05Wrong guess one unlocks the nationality and fills in the initials. Wrong guess two unlocks the position and club or era.
  6. 06Three correct in a row moves you up a difficulty tier. Six moves you up again.
  7. 07One wrong answer resets the streak — your best is saved in this browser.

How do you play the Football Emoji Quiz?

Every round shows a short row of emoji that spells out a footballer — sometimes the sound of the name, sometimes the story behind it. 🧔🦯 is hairy plus cane, so it is Harry Kane. 🎵🔔🍖 is Hey Jude, bell, ham. You type the name you think it is. There are no options to pick from, so a guess is a real guess.

How many guesses do I get?

Three per rebus. The name box suggests players as you type, but the suggestions come from every player on the site rather than only the answers, so a name appearing in the list tells you nothing about whether it is right.

Does it get harder?

Yes. Everyone starts on the warm-up tier. Solve three in a row and the pool moves up to harder rebuses; get to six in a row and you are on the expert tier, which is where the deep-cut legends and the most oblique emoji live. One wrong answer resets the streak and drops you back to the start.

What is an emoji rebus?

A rebus is a puzzle where pictures stand in for words or syllables — the emoji version of the old newspaper picture-riddle. This one is football-only, and every rebus is written by hand: a name works or it does not, so the pool is curated rather than exhaustive. It runs from current Premier League regulars to World Cup winners who retired before some of you were born.

Are there any hints?

Yes, and one of them is free. The blanks under the emoji show the shape of the answer from the start — how many words, and how many letters in each. One wrong guess then reveals the nationality and fills in the initials. A second reveals the position and, depending on the player, the current club or the era they played in. So the third guess is never a shot in the dark.
