How to Play
- Read the emoji. Some sound out the name, some tell you the story.
- Type the player's name. Three guesses, no multiple choice.
- Surnames on their own are accepted where only one player has them, and nicknames work too — Zizou, Gazza, Batigol, Kun.
- Wrong guess one unlocks the nationality. Wrong guess two unlocks the position and club or era.
- Three correct in a row moves you up a difficulty tier. Six moves you up again.

You type the name you think it is. There are no options to pick from, so a guess is a real guess.
How many guesses do I get?
Three per rebus. The name box suggests players as you type, but the suggestions come from every player on the site rather than only the answers, so a name appearing in the list tells you nothing about whether it is right.
Does it get harder?
Yes. Everyone starts on the warm-up tier. Solve three in a row and the pool moves up to harder rebuses; get to six in a row and you are on the expert tier, which is where the deep-cut legends and the most oblique emoji live. One wrong answer resets the streak and drops you back to the start.
What is an emoji rebus?
A rebus is a puzzle where pictures stand in for words or syllables — the emoji version of the old newspaper picture-riddle. This one is football-only, and every rebus is written by hand: a name works or it does not, so the pool is curated rather than exhaustive. It runs from current Premier League regulars to World Cup winners who retired before some of you were born.
Are there any hints?
One wrong guess reveals the nationality. A second reveals the position and, depending on the player, the current club or the era they played in. So the third guess is rarely a shot in the dark.
