Biography
Early Life
Born in Nkol Ngok, Cameroon in 1996, Onana was spotted by a Barcelona scout at a tournament and moved to the La Masia academy as a teenager. He came under the tutelage of Victor Valdés and developed into one of Europe's most technically gifted young goalkeepers.
Breakthrough
Ajax bought him in 2015 and he quickly became one of the best goalkeepers in European football. His Champions League semi-final run with Ajax in 2019 announced him to the world. A contract dispute and a nine-month doping suspension (later reduced to five months) complicated his story, but he returned stronger.
Career
After his suspension, Inter Milan signed him and he won Serie A in 2022/23. Manchester United paid £47M to bring him to the Premier League — a major statement. His first season was mixed, but his distribution and shot-stopping at his best are Premier League-level quality.
Personal Life
Onana is unusual among African goalkeepers in his ball-playing style — he credits his time at La Masia with shaping his technical approach to the game. His suspension came from a banned substance he claims was taken unknowingly via his wife's medication.
Legacy
One of African football's most technically complete goalkeepers, Onana represents a new generation of shot-stoppers who can play as a genuine eleventh outfield player.
