Biography
Early Life
Lisandro Martinez was born on January 18, 1998 in Gualeguay, Entre Rios Province, Argentina. He grew up in a small city far from the Buenos Aires football machine and made his way through the Argentine lower leagues before Newell's Old Boys gave him his professional break.
Breakthrough
Ajax paid £6.5M for Martinez in 2019 and he spent three years developing into one of Europe's best young defenders under Erik ten Hag. When Ten Hag moved to Manchester United in 2022, he immediately made Martinez his first priority defensive signing, paying £57M — significant for a 5'9" central defender in a league where height is supposedly essential.
Career
Martinez's first season at United was remarkable — he was the best performer in a struggling team, winning multiple player of the year awards and proving the doubters who questioned his height wrong with every header, tackle, and interception. Injuries in subsequent seasons disrupted his form but his quality remains undeniable.
Personal Life
Martinez is known for his ferocious competitive spirit — a left-footed, aggressive defender who is as comfortable defending as he is starting attacks. He is a World Cup winner, having been part of Argentina's triumphant squad in Qatar 2022 though not a regular starter. He is close to his partner Muriel Santa Ana.
Legacy
The defender who proved that heart, intelligence, and timing matter more than physical dimensions. At his best, one of the Premier League's most complete defenders. Manchester United's rebuild depends partly on him staying fit.
