Biography
Early Life
Robert Lewandowski was born on August 21, 1988 in Warsaw, Poland. His father Krzysztof played football to a semi-professional level and his mother was a volleyball player. Robert was a dedicated student of the game from childhood, combining natural ability with an obsessive work ethic that would define his career.
Breakthrough
Lewandowski came through Polish football at Znicz Pruszkow before Lech Poznan brought him to a wider audience. Borussia Dortmund signed him in 2010 for just £4.5M — he scored 74 goals in four seasons including four goals in four minutes against Real Madrid in a Champions League semi-final. Bayern took him for free.
Career
At Bayern Munich for eight years, Lewandowski became arguably the most consistent goalscorer in European football history. He scored 344 goals in 375 games. In 2020-21 he scored 41 Bundesliga goals, breaking Gerd Muller's 49-year-old record. He should have won the Ballon d'Or that year — the 2020 ceremony was cancelled due to COVID.
Personal Life
Lewandowski and his wife Anna, who holds a doctorate in nutritional science, have approached his athletic longevity as a science project. Their joint approach to diet, recovery, and training has allowed Robert to stay at the elite level well beyond his 35th birthday. The couple have two daughters.
Legacy
Over 690 career goals, multiple Golden Boot awards, and a record that belongs among the very greatest strikers in the history of the sport. The fact he never won a Ballon d'Or despite deserving one is one of football's great injustices.
