Marc Cucurella has been pretty candid about how his move from Chelsea to Real Madrid all went down, and honestly it makes for a fascinating read. The Spain international has admitted he never really saw the exit coming, but when Real Madrid came calling, things moved at a pace that left him with very little time to think about it. Apparently the whole deal was wrapped up in a day and a half, which in modern football terms is basically the speed of light.
Cucurella also revealed he had a personal phone call with José Mourinho, which is the kind of detail that makes you sit up a bit. Whether that conversation was the thing that tipped him over the edge we can only guess, but it clearly did not hurt. When one of football's most persuasive managers rings you personally, you are probably not hanging up in a hurry.
The £52m fee is interesting too. Chelsea paid an absolute fortune for Cucurella back in 2022, somewhere in the region of £62m, so they have taken a small loss but not a catastrophic one given how his time at Stamford Bridge went. He was never really able to nail down that left-back spot as his own and the move to Madrid feels like a genuine fresh start for him rather than a step down.
From a Chelsea perspective, it is hard to argue too strongly against this one. They have a squad packed with options and Cucurella, talented as he is, was not exactly a non-negotiable presence in their plans. Getting £52m for a player who was not always first choice is decent business when you look at it that way.
For Cucurella himself, this is obviously a big moment. Going back to Spain with one of the biggest clubs in world football is the kind of opportunity most players only dream about. His quote says it all really. When Real come for you, it is very difficult to say no. And you know what, he is absolutely right about that.
