There are not many footballers who can claim to be a key selling point in a presidential election, but Mason Greenwood is apparently one of them. Both candidates running to become Fenerbahce's next president have identified the former Manchester United and England striker as a top transfer target, which tells you quite a lot about the pull Greenwood now has in European football even after everything that has happened.
Greenwood, of course, left United following the deeply serious allegations made against him in 2022, allegations he denied. United eventually terminated his contract and he moved to Getafe on loan before joining Marseille permanently, where he has been genuinely brilliant. Twelve goals and nine assists in Ligue 1 last season. The football has done the talking, whether people are comfortable with that or not, and clubs are taking notice.
Fenerbahce is an interesting destination when you think about it. They finished second in the Turkish Super Lig last season and are desperate to finally get over the line and challenge seriously in Europe. Jose Mourinho is the manager, which adds another layer of intrigue because Mourinho loves a player who has a point to prove and Greenwood very much fits that description. Those two together could be either brilliant or an absolute circus, possibly both at the same time.
From a pure football perspective, Greenwood at 23 is still developing and his form in France showed he has serious quality. The fact that two presidential candidates are using him as a campaign promise suggests Fenerbahce see him as a genuine statement signing, not just a squad filler. That is a big deal for a club trying to build momentum.
As a United fan it is a strange feeling watching Greenwood thrive elsewhere given how his time at Old Trafford ended, but football has a funny way of moving on faster than most of us expect. Fenerbahce getting him would be a real coup for Turkish football and a fascinating next chapter for Greenwood himself.
