Manchester United looked to be making progress in the transfer market, which in itself felt like cause for quiet celebration, but now their £35m pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson has hit a wall. According to BBC Sport, the deal is in doubt, and United fans are once again left wondering whether the club can actually get a signing over the line without it turning into a full-blown soap opera.
Ederson, not to be confused with the City goalkeeper with the same name because that would be a very strange signing, has been one of the standout midfielders in Serie A over the past couple of seasons. Atalanta, as anyone who watches European football knows, are not a club that sells their best players cheaply or quietly. They drive a hard bargain and they are not shy about walking away from a table if the offer does not suit them. United probably knew this going in, which makes the current situation feel a little avoidable.
The concern for United is real. Their midfield has needed proper investment for years now, and Ederson would have added exactly the kind of energy, athleticism and box-to-box quality that the team has been crying out for. He is the sort of player who makes everyone around him look better, which is not something you can say about every midfielder in European football right now.
If this deal collapses entirely, United will need to move fast and find an alternative, because going into another season with the same midfield questions hanging over the squad would be a serious problem. The window does not stay open forever and the teams around them are not standing still.
Whether this is a genuine breakdown in negotiations or just the usual transfer window noise remains to be seen. Sometimes these stories pop up and the deal gets done anyway. Sometimes they do not. United fans have seen both enough times to know not to get too comfortable either way.
