Mason Greenwood's career continues to take twists that nobody could have scripted, and the latest chapter has him reportedly weighing up moves to either Fenerbahce or Atletico Madrid while still under contract with Marseille through to 2029. Sources close to the situation have told ESPN that both clubs have made their interest known, and Greenwood himself is apparently open to listening. Not exactly the quiet life, is it.
It's worth remembering that Marseille took a genuine gamble bringing Greenwood in after his departure from Manchester United, and by most accounts the football side of things has gone reasonably well for him in France. He's shown quality on the pitch, which is ultimately what clubs pay attention to. So it's no great surprise that bigger names are sniffing around, though Marseille will surely not want to lose a player they're contracted to for another four years without making it very much worth their while financially.
Atletico Madrid is the more interesting option of the two if you're thinking purely about football. Diego Simeone runs a tight, intense ship and has a history of getting the absolute best out of forwards who have something to prove. Greenwood certainly fits that profile. Fenerbahce, on the other hand, would offer him a high-profile environment with genuine European ambition, particularly with the project they've been building in Turkey over recent seasons. Neither destination is a step down by any means.
From a Manchester United perspective, and yes this writer is very much one of those, there's a strange feeling watching all of this unfold. United handled the whole Greenwood situation in a way that left almost everyone unsatisfied, and now he's potentially heading to a club like Atletico while United are busy trying to find a striker themselves. Football really does have a sense of humour.
Whatever you think of the off-field history, the football question is straightforward enough. Greenwood has talent, clubs want him, and this summer could define the next phase of his career in a big way. Where he ends up will say a lot about his ambitions.
