Real Madrid have had a £130m bid for Julian Alvarez rejected by Atletico Madrid, and honestly, you can hardly blame Atletico for telling them where to go.
The offer, reportedly worth 150 million euros, sounds enormous on paper. And in most cases it would be. But Atletico Madrid did not spend big money bringing Alvarez in from Manchester City last summer just to turn around and sell him to their biggest rivals a few months later. That would be an absolutely wild piece of business, and not in a good way.
Alvarez has been genuinely impressive since arriving at the Metropolitano. He brings energy, goals, and that relentless pressing style that fits Diego Simeone's setup like a glove. Atletico fans adore him already, and Simeone clearly sees him as central to what he is building. So when Real Madrid come knocking with a cheque, no matter how large, the answer was always going to be a firm no.
From Real Madrid's perspective you can understand the logic. They are always on the lookout for top quality attacking options and Alvarez is one of the best strikers in the world right now. He won the World Cup with Argentina, he won the Champions League with Manchester City, and the lad is still only 25. The upside is obvious.
But there is a certain audacity to asking your city rivals to sell you their star striker. It feels a bit like turning up to your neighbour's barbecue and asking if you can have their best sausages. The answer is no. It was always going to be no. Real Madrid must have known that going in.
Whether they come back with an even bigger offer remains to be seen. Transfer sagas have a habit of dragging on, and 150 million euros is rarely the final word in these situations. But Atletico hold all the cards here. They have a happy player, a manager who loves him, and absolutely no financial pressure to sell.
Good luck to Real Madrid. They are going to need it.
